ASDEC Math:  Multisensory Math Practitioner Certification Levels 1 and/or 2

Teaching Level: Multisensory Math Practitioner Elementary K-6: Level 1

ASDEC’s teaching level certification in Multisensory Math is designed for educational professionals working with students in the classroom as well as those who work with students in small groups or one-to-one. Content should cover K-8 instruction, foundation skills to the beginnings of algebra.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Coursework: Two Courses Required

Practitioner candidates must complete two Required Courses (all ASDEC courses also qualify for Graduate Credit from Trinity University Washington)

  • 1.     The Multisensory Math I course only available through ASDEC and
  • 2.     A Structured Literacy Course from an IMSLEC, O-G Academy or IDA Knowledge and Practice Accredited Institution. 
  • a.      The Multisensory Math I introductory course should be completed prior to beginning the practicum of teaching.

ASDEC Multisensory Math 1 (onsite or online): Must be completed prior to entering supervision practicum.

■      Complete in-class assignments during the coursework to be evaluated as evidence to support entry into the practicum

■      Complete the Lesson Plan Project- Lesson Plan with Sample Materials plus the Video Demonstration of the “new Introduction”

■      Reading Summaries - Readings will be available one week prior to class and recommended reading prior to day one.

■       Complete Final Exam within the required time frame of the course

2. Structured Literacy Foundations (AOGPE Associate, IMSLEC Teaching Level or IDA Knowledge and Practice Aligned accredited course) can be completed prior to taking the MSM1 course or within 9 months of completing MSM 1. It must include multisensory principles of instruction and multisensory lesson plan design and implementation. Contact ASDEC for information about courses that meet this requirement.

Supervised Practicum

■          Complete 100 hours of classroom or individual teaching sessions

■          Meet with a supervisor monthly, virtually or in person-10 months

■          Submit 5 successful live or recorded lessons using the MSM1 Lesson Plan

■          Submit monthly lesson plans and materials as required to supervisor

■          Readings- determined by practicum candidate’s teaching level and needs

■          Complete written summary

■          Create of a professional portfolio which includes all documentation of the practicum experience:  rubric available upon request

SUMMER PRACTICUM: Optional – interns earn two months of supervision credit without fee.

Assist Certified MSM Instructor in daily MSM lessons for three-four week summer math camp. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • ·        Developing and Implementing a minimum of two lessons;
  • Or, with proper prior approval, running a separate section of the camp adapting lesson plans from the lead instructor
  • Two completed observations

Teaching Level:  Multisensory Math Practitioner K-Algebra  Level 2

Complete All requirements for Level 1 Practicum but the emphasis on observations would be at the upper elementary and secondary levels with a focus on pre-algebra and algebra.

Coursework:  Three Courses:  Multisensory Math 1, Multisensory Math 2 which covers K-Algebra content with strategies for Algebra 1, Geometry and Selected Topics in Algebra 2, and a Structured Literacy Course as outlined above.  

Practicum:

■          Complete 100 hours of classroom or individual teaching sessions- including evidence of instruction in each domain over a 10- month period

■          Meet with a supervisor monthly, virtually or in person-15 months

■           Complete 7 observations with feedback

■          Lessons may be recorded on site or through virtual learning

■          Submit lesson plans and materials to supervisor

■          Readings- determined by practicum candidate’s teaching level and needs

■         Complete written summary

■         Creation of a professional portfolio 

SUMMER PRACTICUM: Optional – interns earn two months of supervision credit without fee

ASDEC Math Level 3 Certification:  Multisensory Math Instructor of Teaching Certification

Instructor of Teaching Level Math Certification qualifies individuals to support trainees within a school, offer local workshops using MSM Level 1 presentation materials, and supervise trainees in a MSM Level I practicum and eventually offer the MSM 1 course with approved MSM 1 presentation materials. 

Degree

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning

Prerequisite Coursework and Practicum

Completion of the following coursework:

  • MSM Level I and MSM Level II (including successful completion of all course requirements and final exams)
  • Structured Literacy Foundations (AOGPE Associate course, IMSLEC Teaching Level accredited course or other Structured Literacy course approved by the accrediting institution) It must include multisensory principles of instruction and multisensory lesson plan design and implementation

Completion of all components of  Teaching Level Multisensory Math Certification - Level I Practicum (see guidelines above)

Teaching Experience in Multisensory Math

Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in an MSM program including all components of MSM lesson planning, individual student program design, report writing and student assessment.

Instructor of Teaching Internship and Coursework

  • Work as an assistant and/or co-instructor under the supervision of MSM Instructor for one entire MSM I course
    • Observe lectures, assist in hands-on exercises with trainees, assist in lecture presentation, support with record keeping, support in managing course materials
    • Five additional observations recorded or live of supervision of trainees.
  • Complete one cycle as assistant director of MSM I course participating in syllabus development, lecture planning and presentation, and supervision of trainees in conferences or class participation seminars.
  • Participate in one cycle as a supervisor in a practicum participating in observation and feedback of MSM Teaching Level trainees and assigning practicum readings.
  • Add documentation to professional MSM portfolio -
    • Instructor of Teaching Portfolio Components
      • Five in-depth annotations of MSM I or II Manual chapters
      • Written observation feedback of trainees supervised by the intern
      • Observation feedback of course teaching components and/ or demonstrations by Instructor of Teaching Supervisor
      • Additional readings with summary and reaction (articles, chapters of books, research articles, MSM blog entries, or website analysis)
    • Five assigned by Instructor of Teaching Supervisor
    • Five articles of personal choice  
  • Exit review of all Instructor of Teaching portfolio materials with Instructor of Teaching Supervisor

Continuing Education

Minimum of 30 clock hours of continuing education every three years after completion of the Instructor of Teaching Level requirements
